Brighton Bierhaus, Brighton Bier’s brewery tap on Edward Street, is to host a Day for the Greys on Wednesday, December 20th, during which 20% of all the money taken over the bar from midday to midnight will be donated towards the crowdfunding launched to purchase the freehold of the famous Hanover music venue.

It comes as a group of local residents are making a bid to save their award winning pub from closing down and are appealing to the people of Brighton Hove to raise 400,000 by the end of December to keep the doors open.

The group, known as The Friends of the Greys, was formed in response to a decision by current owners Ei Group to sell off the pub, which has been at its current location in Southover Street since 1878, but has suffered from multiple changes of management and a lack of investment in recent years.

The volunteer group has already taken a major step towards their goal in securing “Asset of Community Value” status from Brighton Hove City Council.

Spokesperson for the Friends of the Greys, Keith Farmer commented: “Our vision is to reinvent The Greys as a social enterprise owned and run by the residents of Hanover and the wider public of Brighton and beyond.

“As well as providing a great pub we also aim to provide a daytime resource for community groups, offering space for creativity, learning,

support and wellbeing initiatives run by, and for, residents.

“We will also be providing the very best of British and worldwide real ales and craft beers, locally sourced food, and reinvigorating the Greys’ tradition of live music.”

Brighton Bier director Stephen Whitehurst explained that the company felt a solidarity with the community bid having earlier this year bought the Bierhaus, formerly The Jury’s Out, from EiGroup, the pubco giant that has now put the Greys up for sale.

“We strongly believe that Brighton needs more independent freehouse pubs that can give people choice and quality when it comes to beer,” he said.

“It’s what we’ve tried to do at the Bierhaus, and we’re sure that in the community’s hands The Greys can do a similar job.”

Keith Farmer is delighted to win support for the campaign from a pub that’s only a five minute walk away.

“I’m one of those who has appreciated what the Bierhaus has brought to this part of Brighton, and it’s fantastic that it’s now backing us in such a practical and fun way,” he said.

“Next Wednesday is sure to be a good day and we hope people will drop by the Bierhaus and help us raise the money we need to buy the Greys simply by drinking beer!”
